Fortunately, we had summer vacations as an excuse to get together, we finally planned a summer vacations together, with a trip to Mainpat.
We explored Mainpat, Chhattisgarh, a lesser-known gem, and I am thrilled to share my wonderful experience with you.
Where is Mainpat Located?
Mainpat is a small village in the Surguja district of Chhattisgarh, with the nearest town being Ambikapur.
Often referred to as the ‘Mini Tibet of India’ and the ‘Shimla of Chhattisgarh,’ it is home to a vibrant Tibetan community that has retained its cultural roots away from the urban hustle.
Nestled in the hills, Mainpat is an ideal retreat for travelers seeking tranquility and natural beauty.
First Impressions of Mainpat
Having spent most of my life in the central part of India without exploring the east, Mainpat was an entirely new experience.
The Tibetan culture was evident from the moment we arrived—traditional Tibetan flags, monasteries, and houses adorned with colorful carvings of flowers and Chinese dragons gave the village a distinctive charm.

The Scenic Beauty
Mainpat is perched on a hilly terrain, offering breathtaking views of lush greenery, rolling hills, and serene valleys.
No matter where we looked, the landscape was dotted with farms, cottages, and a sense of untouched beauty.
The picturesque setting makes Mainpat a perfect romantic and peaceful getaway. The village is sparsely populated, and the locals lead content and simple lives.

Mainpat Places to Visit
Mainpat has several fascinating attractions that cater to nature lovers, adventure seekers, and those interested in Tibetan culture. Here are some of the must-visit spots:
1. Tiger Point
Tiger Point is the most famous tourist destination in Mainpat. This scenic picnic spot offers a mesmerizing view of the valley along with a beautiful Mainpat waterfall. The trek to reach Tiger Point involves traversing a muddy road, but the effort is well worth it. The gentle sound of the waterfall, the cool breeze, and the lush surroundings make it a refreshing retreat. Though we visited before the monsoon, when the waterfall was relatively small, the overall ambiance was spectacular, perfect for taking memorable photographs.

2. Buddhist Monastery
As Mainpat has a strong Tibetan influence, it is home to a beautiful Buddhist monastery painted in vibrant shades of red and gold. The monastery serves as a place of worship and cultural preservation. One of the most enjoyable activities here was spinning the prayer wheels—a unique and fun experience. We also visited a grander pagoda-style monastery under construction, which promises to be a breathtaking attraction once completed.

3. Zilzala – The Shaking Ground
One of the most intriguing spots in Mainpat is Zilzala, a natural phenomenon resembling quicksand. This vast expanse of greenery is surrounded by trees, creating an almost cinematic setting. The ground here has a unique feature—it vibrates when stepped on! Jumping on it gives the sensation of bouncing on a springboard. This rare experience makes it a must-visit location.

4. Thinthini Pathar – The Musical Rock
Another fascinating attraction is Thinthini Pathar, a large white boulder among ordinary-looking rocks. When struck with a smaller stone, this boulder produces a resonating musical sound due to its hollow interior. Playing ‘music’ on a rock was an amusing and unforgettable experience.

5. Kailash Caves
Our journey continued to the Kailash Caves, a small yet spiritual temple nestled among rocky formations and inhabited by langurs. The trek to reach this temple was bumpy due to undeveloped roads, but it is a popular spot during peak tourist season. Those who venture further can explore a nearby hidden waterfall, adding an element of adventure to the visit.
