As our flight descended into Sri Lanka, the first thing I noticed wasn’t a skyline or highways. Instead, rows of coconut trees stretched across the land like a green welcome mat. It felt refreshing, almost symbolic of what the island would offer over the next ten days.

Often called the teardrop of India, Sri Lanka is one of the most diverse travel destinations in Asia. Within a single trip, you can explore misty mountains, colonial towns, tea plantations, golden beaches and wildlife-filled forests.

Based on our 10-day road trip across the country, I have listed down all the things to do in Sri Lanka, traversing across ancient temples, tea estates, safari parks and peaceful coastal towns.

Our road trip covered several of the country’s most famous destinations.

This route allows you to experience nearly every landscape Sri Lanka offers — mountains, forests, wildlife and beaches.

Arriving at Bandaranaike International Airport

Our journey started at Bandaranaike International Airport.

Compared to large airports in India or Southeast Asia, it felt smaller but surprisingly busy.

Inside the airport, gemstone stores and duty-free shops were everywhere; a reminder that Sri Lanka is famous for its sapphires and precious stones.

Visa on arrival was smooth and quick (more on this at the end of the article), and soon we met our guide who would drive us through the country over the next several days.

Originally we planned to visit Pinnawala Elephant Orphanage, but because our flight was delayed we had to skip it and continue straight toward Kandy.

But if you get a chance, you must visit the orphanage to spend some time with the elephants.

Kandy: The Cultural Heart of Sri Lanka

Our first stop in this island country was Kandy, which is one of the most important cultural destinations in the country.

Driving through the town felt familiar in many ways. Just as Indian cities have temples on every street, Kandy seemed to have Buddha statues and monasteries in nearly every corner.

The two stops that stood out for me in Kandy were Sigiriya Rock Fortress and dambulla cave Temple.

Sigiriya Rock Fortress: Our sightseeing in Kandy started on a adventurous note and for all the right reasons.

So, if you are making notes on things to do in Sri lanka, make sure to add Sigiriya Rock Fortress. It was a tiring yet surprising hike up the mountain.

Also known as Lion Rock, this massive stone formation once held a royal palace built by King Kashyapa in the 5th century.

The climb to the top is challenging, but the panoramic view of forests and villages makes it worth every step.

Pro Tip: While hiking to the fortress, it can get warm and humid. Carry a bottle of water and a portable fan (check out on amazon) to avoid dehydration.

Dambulla Cave Temple: Another remarkable site nearby is Dambulla Cave Temple. Inside the caves are colourful murals and dozens of Buddha statues, while a massive golden Buddha overlooks the entrance.

We also tasted the local Sri Lankan food here called the Hoppers, that was a crisp pancake shaped like a bowl and served with curry.

Tea Plantations and the Hills of Nuwara Eliya

Sri Lanka is famous worldwide for its tea, and the hill country is where most of it grows.

We were supposed to visit Ella and so we on our drive toward Ella we passed through Nuwara Eliya. Surprisngly, the town felt very different from the rest of the country.

We crossed colonial cottages, horse pastures and cool mountain air that gave the feeling that the city still has traces of British Colonisattion, which is why it looked like a British countryside town.

Looking back, skipping an overnight stay here was probably one of the few mistakes in our itinerary.

Ella: The Most Beautiful Place in Sri Lanka

If you ask me that one place to see in Sri lanka that should not be missed, I would say Ella, because there is nothing more beautiful in this country than this small bohemian style town in the country.

Surrounded by mountains and tea plantations, Ella feels peaceful in a way that’s difficult to describe.

Things to Do in Ella

Apart from the cool, cute cafes and activities like hiking & zip lining, there are two things you can add in your list of Ella attractions.

The first is the Nine Arches Bridge. As the name suggest, it is bridge standing over pillars, forming nine arches.

Surrounded by dense forest, the bridge looks something outwardly or even out of a harry Potter movie, resembling the bridge that the Hogwarts’s train takes while enroute to the magic school.

Naturally, it is a favoutite spot for photographers where they can capture the beautiful bridge and also the trains slowly cross the arches, if they are lucky enough.

The second awe-inspiring location was Lipton’s Seat. Named after the Scottish tea magnate Sir Thomas Lipton, it is a panoramic viewpoint where you can see the miles of rolling green hills.

Because the route is through tea gardens, the only way to the top is through ‘tuk tuk’ Sri lankan rickshaw and an experience in itself through endless tea gardens, and small villages.

How much time needed in Ella: Two days are enough to enjoy the breathtaking views of Ella.

Looking back, maybe our time in Ella was splendid because of the pleasant weather and the resort we stayed in. called 98 Acres Resort and Spa (check the rates here), this Ella hotel sits across a valley with cottages overlooking the hills.It was gorgeous, comfortable and had the best service.

Today, whenever I think of Sri Lanka, Ella is the place that comes to mind first.

Yala National Park Safari Experience

Next on our route was Yala National Park.

The park is famous for wildlife safaris, especially leopard sightings.

Visitors explore the park in open jeeps that drive through forests, lakes and grasslands. During our safari we spotted elephants, exotic birds and even a distant leopard resting on a tree branch.

We had a afternoon safari, where we had a chance to see a leopord perched atop a tree, some elephants, and couple of beautiful birds.

I also distinctinly remember watching a peacock perform a full dance while trying to attract a peahen, which was the highlight of my safari.

However, we spoke to a few travellers, who opined that morning safaris provide better sighting and experience.

If you have never experienced a safari before, this is something you must really add into your list of things to do in Sri Lanka.

Bentota: Beaches and Coastal Charm

From the forests of Yala we continued to Bentota; a charming little coastal resort town loacted at the South west coast of Sri Lanka.

Bentota’s beaches are among the most beautiful in the country. The sand is bright white and the water shifts between shades of turquoise and deep blue. It felt surreal to bask in the golden beaches of this town.

Apart from lazing on the beach, you can also explore the Galle fort ( similar to Fort Kochi, details here) and turtle hatchery.

Galle fort had a lighthouse and was surrounded by European-style streets and colonial buildings. we also found currency exchanges here, that came in handy.

While in Bentota, also visit the many turtle hatcheries which the country promotes. We got to see multiple species, sizes and types of turtles and it felt good to see that even endangered species are protected and cared for in these hatcheries.

Experience Sri Lankan culture

While shortlisting things to do in Sri Lanka, do leave a space for its cultural heritage. Visit a traditional mask workshop where you can witness artisans carving colourful wooden masks; a unique craft deeply connected to Sri Lankan culture.

Colombo: Sri Lanka’s Capital City

Our final stop was Colombo.

Compared to the rest of the country, Colombo felt like a busy metropolitan city. During our visit the entire city was decorated with lights for Christmas and New Year celebrations.

Belonging to India, where Christmas is not celebrated in a grand manner, witnessing the entire city being lit up felt incredible. We also saw the Independence Memorial Hall, known for its grand architecture and historical significance, in all of it’s glory, reminding me of the history of this trip at the last leg of the trip.

Things That Surprised Me About Sri Lanka

Several things stood out during the trip.

The most noticeable was cleanliness. Streets, tourist spots and public spaces were remarkably well maintained.

Another surprising detail was the number of bridal beauty parlours across the country. Many displayed large posters of brides covered in gold jewellery; something quite common in South Asian wedding culture.

But above all, it was the warmth of the people that made the trip special.

Best Time to Visit Sri Lanka

One of the most common questions travelers have is the best time to visit Sri Lanka. The good news is that Sri Lanka is a year-round destination because different regions experience different weather patterns.

For most travelers, December to April is considered the best time to visit the western and southern parts of Sri Lanka, including Colombo, Bentota, and Galle. During these months the weather is sunny and perfect for beaches and sightseeing.

But if you prefer hill country such as Ella and Nuwara Eliya, the cooler climate during November- January makes travel pleasant.

If you are a wildlife lover, you must plan around February and July to visit Yala National Park when animals are easier to spot near water sources.

Overall, the best time for a balanced itinerary covering beaches, hills and wildlife is between December and March, when most parts of the country enjoy clear skies and comfortable temperatures.

How to Travel Around Sri Lanka

Getting around the country is fairly easy and is an important part of planning a Sri Lanka Travel Guide itinerary. The island is compact, which means most destinations can be reached within a few hours by road.

Many travelers choose to hire a private driver or guide, especially for a multi-city road trip covering places like Kandy, Ella, and Bentota. This option is comfortable and convenient, particularly if you want flexibility with stops along the way.

Sri Lanka is also famous for its scenic train journeys. The train route between Kandy and Ella is considered one of the most beautiful train rides in the world, passing through tea plantations, misty hills and small villages.

For short distances within cities, tuk-tuks are the most common form of transport. They are inexpensive, easy to find, and perfect for quick local travel.

Sri Lanka Visa for Indians

Before you plan a Sri Lanka tour, you must understand it’s visa process, which is simple and easy.

You can apply for visa using an Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA). It can be applied online before travel through the official immigration website of Sri Lanka. The process is simple and usually takes only a few minutes to complete. After approval, travelers receive an electronic confirmation that allows entry into the country.

Previously, visa on arrival was allowed for a new nationalities. However, it is best to apply the visa through ETA for assured approvals. a 30-day tourist visa, which can be extended if required.

While Sri Lanka felt a lot like Kerala, it was a enriching experience. The people are warm and are more than willing to let travellers know their culture

A road trip across Sri Lanka gave us a rare combination of landscapes and experiences.

Within ten days we explored mountains, tea plantations, wildlife parks and tropical beaches.

But what stayed with me most were the quiet moments ; the mountain views in Ella, the peacock dance in Yala, and the calm coastal breeze in Bentota.

At the time it felt like just another trip.

Now, surrounded by city life and concrete, I realise it was something much more special, a journey through one of the most beautiful islands in the world.
