I had always dreamt about a vacation to Europe long before I truly fell in love with travelling.
But I knew planning a trip to Europe comes with certain realities: long flights, expensive visas, and a travel budget that often requires careful planning.
So I came to know about a country that was just a few hours from India and offered similar European experiences, and I jumped at the opportunity.
That country is Georgia.

We travelled in August, and though it was considerably warm in Tbilisi, we thoroughly enjoyed the dramatic mountain landscapes, charming old towns, centuries-old churches, and a wine culture that is believed to be over 8,000 years old.
In this Georgia travel guide, I am sharing my 10-day itinerary from India, covering some of the country’s most beautiful destinations, including Tbilisi, Kazbegi, and the famous wine region of Kakheti.
Along the way, you will also find practical tips on how to plan your own trip easily from India.
Why Visit Georgia As an Indian Traveller?
In a crux, Georgia looks like Europe, feels like Asia, and welcomes travellers with warmth.
It is relatively close with direct and connecting flights from major Indian cities like Mumbai, Delhi, Chennai, etc.
You can either take a flight to Tbilisi or Batumi and experience vibrant cities, historic churches, mountain landscapes, traditional vineyards, and gorgeous beaches.
But the best thing is, Georgia is still not overrun by mass tourism. Many parts of the country feel authentic and relaxed, allowing travellers to experience local culture without overwhelming crowds.
Here’s a detailed guide on the best time to visit Georgia.

7-10 Day Slow Georgia Travel Itinerary- Places to Visit in Georgia
In 10 days, you can cover 4-5 cities in Georgia, but if you really want to enjoy the country, you need 10 days in 1-2 cities to explore it better without rushing.
We included three major cities in our Georgia Itinerary:
- Tbilisi – the capital city
- Kazbegi – the Caucasus mountain region
- Kakheti – the wine region of Georgia
Together, these destinations provide a perfect introduction to the country’s culture, landscapes, and traditions.
However, you can end the trip at Batumi, which is a resort city with unique architecture, black sea, a casino, and an 8-km promenade.
Here is our Georgia Travel Itinerary, including places we visited in each city.
2-3 days in Tbilisi

Tbilisi, the capital of Georgia, is one of the most charming cities in the Caucasus region.
Since we skipped Batumi, we took a flight to Tbilisi. It was an early morning flight, and it took us 7 hours to reach Tbilisi.
The capital city has a unique character. It blends old-world charm with modern design, evident in the drive into the city through wide roads, modern structures, and a river flowing gracefully through the centre.
We had a private driver for the entire trip who came to pick us up from the airport. ( You can book a private driver from GoTrip.com)
Places to Visit in Tbilisi

Tbilisi is very walkable, and exploring the city on foot is one of the best ways to experience its charm. We spent most of our time exploring the city on foot, travelling across old town, the bazaars, cafes, churches, etc.
We discovered a lot of famous and not-so-famous places to visit in Tbilisi, but here are some of the most interesting and must-visit places in Tbilisi:
Holy Trinity Cathedral (Sameba Church)
Rustaveli Avenue
The cultural heart of Tbilisi is lined with museums, theatres, cafes, and historic buildings.
Old Town Tbilisi
The old town area has a heritage charm with colourful wooden balconies, narrow streets, and traditional houses.
Fabrika Square
A creative hub popular with artists, travellers, and young locals. It has cafes, small, cute shops, and a party vibe.
Sulphur Baths
Indulging in a sulphur bath is one of the most iconic attractions in Tbilisi. These bathhouses have been part of the city’s culture for centuries.
While you are planning to travel to Georgia, a detailed guide on Tbilisi will help you get an in-depth review of all the must-do things in the capital city.
1-2 days in Kazbegi (Stepantsminda)

Located in the Caucasus mountains, the region is known for its dramatic landscapes, winding mountain roads, and breathtaking views.
It took us 3 hours to reach Kazbegi from Tbilisi via the Georgian Military Highway.
The scenic drive was an experience in itself, where we experienced the road winding through valleys and mountains, with rivers and forests appearing at every turn.
While you rent a car to travel to Stepantsminda, hiring a private driver is more recommended, since the valley roads can be challenging.
Owing to the Georgia-Russian conflict, we saw hundreds of trucks lined up along the highway. Our driver explained that the nearby Russian border was temporarily closed and that the trucks were waiting for it to reopen.
Seeing such an enormous queue of trucks stretching across the road was quite striking.
Gergeti Trinity Church
This iconic church sits high on a hill overlooking the town with the Caucasus mountains rising all around it.
We had booked a 4×4 vehicle for the steep uphill drive.
Although the guide informed us that we could feel breathless as it is at a considerable height, we felt quite comfortable during the ride and even when we reached there.
It felt like the grand mountain was protecting the church and its visitors, while the cold breeze welcomed us lovingly.
Russia–Georgia Friendship Monument
While driving towards the next destination, we took a pit stop to visit the Russia- Georgia Friendship monument, which is a semi-circular structure decorated with colourful mosaics overlooking a vast mountain valley.

While we had visited the mountains above, it looked different from here and was completely breathtaking.
Additional Details for Kazbegi Trip
- We stayed in Kazbegi for one night, travelling from Tbilisi in a private car, visiting Zhinvali Reservoir and Ananuri Fortress Complex on the way.
- I would recommend staying in a mountain-facing hotel to glimpse the mighty Caucasus Mountains in the early morning.
- If you do not want to hire a driver, I would recommend booking a full-day trip to Kazbegi from Tbilisi, a group tour with an English-speaking guide.
- But if you are travelling with family, you can book a private day trip with an English-speaking guide and hotel pickup.

1-2 days in Kakheti (Telavi)- The Wine Region

Giant Plant Tree In TelaviAfter the mesmerising mountains, we visited the wine region of Georgia- Kakheti.
Called the ‘cradle of wine, Georgian wine-making tradition dates back more than 8,000 years. The center of this wine-making culture is in Kakheti.
We stayed in Telavi, the administrative center of Kakheti, and found it to be a quiet and charming town surrounded by vineyards.
While the city was not crowded like Tbilisi, it was beautiful, well planned, and clean.
Being the quintessential wine region, we saw various wineries around the city, while every house had porches and gardens filled with grapevines.

When in Kakheti, I highly recommend booking a wine tasting at one of the wineries.
We chose the winery Khareba for wine tasting and grape stomping.
The messy yet incredibly memorable experience of stomping grapes for wine-making gave us the real spirit of Georgia: simple, authentic, and joyful.
Detailed winery read: Grape Stomping at Winery Khareba and travel tips.
Must-Visit Places in Kakheti
There are not many things to do in Telavi, apart from enjoying the old town charm.
However, here are a few places you can visit while in Kakheti.
- Telavi Old Town
- Giant Plane Tree of Telavi
- Alaverdi Monastery
- Local vineyards and wineries
- Sighnaghi (often called the City of Love)
- Lagodekhi National Park – While it can also be done as a day trip from Tbilisi, it is better to travel from Telavi.
If you are planning to visit Kakheti (Telavi), this detailed blog on things to do in Kakheti includes places to see and skip, best hotels, and transportation tips.
Last 2 days in Tbilisi
There are two options to spend the last 2 days in Georgia.
You can either travel to Batumi, the black sand beach city, or explore Tbilisi and its surroundings more deeply.
We chose the latter and explored Tbilisi more deeply.
The last two days were an ideal time for small sightseeing spots around Tbilisi.

Mtskheta:
40 min away from Tbilisi, Mtskheta, ‘the holy city’, is the spiritual heart of Georgia. The Svetitskhoveli Cathedral and the 6th-century Jvari Monastery are the two main spots to visit.

You can reach Mtskheta by cab or book guided tours to better understand Georgia’s culture and religion. (Book Mtskheta tour here).
Chronicles of Georgia:
The massive stone pillars and quiet surroundings of the Chronicles of Georgia (probably the most common sight in Georgia) make it feel very different from the busy city.

Dashbashi Canyon:
You can also visit Dashbashi Canyon and the Diamond Bridge, which has a huge glass bridge suspended between the canyon cliffs with incredible views all around.
Atop the bridge, it feels like you are in the air, save for the glass around you.
Looking down through the glass floor at the waterfall and green canyon below felt equally terrifying and exciting.
It would be best to get all the details about these day trips from Tbilisi before you go.
