Kerala, with its serene backwaters and quiet beaches, is rightly considered one of the most beautiful places to travel in India.

But the unique resorts in Kerala we stayed in ended up shaping the experience far more than I had imagined.

And while I look back on this trip with love and longing, I can’t miss sharing the unique Kerala hotels that made the journey feel richer and more memorable.

First Impressions & Location

Our first stay in Kerala turned out to be memorable for a very unexpected reason: nostalgia.

If you’ve grown up in a North Indian household in a small town, you’ll remember vetiver (khus) curtains hung on windows during summers to keep the house cool.

Unique resorts in kerala: Abad fort kochi hotel
Vetiver curtains

The moment I noticed them here, I was instantly transported back to my childhood, sitting in my living room during summer vacations, drawing quietly while those curtains cooled the air around me.

What made the stay even better was its location. The hotel sits right in the heart of Kochi, which helped us visit all the places on our Kochi itinerary without much travel.

It almost felt unreal that the Dutch Palace, which I loved exploring, was just a 15-minute walk away.

Fort Kochi was equally close, where we ended up every evening, even after long, tiring days.

Rooms & Overall Ambience

The hotel gave us a rustic, homely feel that felt known and comfortable. (Check current room tariffs here)

Granite flooring, wooden cot-style beds, and simple interiors just added to this comforting feel.

The rooms were quite spacious and came with all basic amenities.

Nothing fancy, but comfortable enough to rest, recharge, and step back out into the city.

Food & In-House Experience

I genuinely enjoyed the food at the in-house restaurant. For a vegetarian traveller like me, there were ample options,

I particularly loved their paneer curry for the authentic taste and flavour.

Mr Thomas, a Keralite staff at the restaurant, personally made sure we got everything we needed.

What I loved?

  • The hotel location that helped us roam around the city on foot, taking in the real vibe, which gets missed while travelling in cars. At night, we wandered through quiet streets, passing closed shops and sleeping cafés, just soaking in the stillness of the city.
  • It had good food and a nostalgic stay.

What could be better?

Our stay at this hotel in Kochi could have been better if we had some better amenities in our rooms.

We really missed a kettle and a mini fridge, which are typically provided at other hotels to satisfy our late-night cravings for tea and coffee.

Would I Recommend Abad Fort Kochi?

Yes, for the right kind of traveller.

If you’re on a budget and want a centrally located hotel in Kochi, this is a solid choice.

And if you enjoy stays that feel warm, traditional, and slightly nostalgic rather than modern or luxury-driven, Abad Fort Kochi is definitely worth considering.

It may not impress you instantly, but it stays with you in quiet, familiar ways, much like the city around it.

B’canti Boutique Beach Resort Review: Best Beach Resort in Varakala

This was our last hotel in Kerala, marking the last two days in Kerala, and B’canti ended up being one of the highlights of our trip.

First Impression:

Compared to my first hotel in Kerala, B’canti felt like a refreshing change with its service and architecture.

The property had a blend of modern and traditional Kerala architecture, giving it a distinct charm.

The Private Cliff Access: The Best Part

I absolutely fell in love with its secluded, private beach access that opened up to a clean and quiet cliff overlooking the blue ocean.

Secluded cliff that feels almost private

The large pool at the centre of the resort added to the atmosphere, and the sundeck chairs were perfect for unwinding after a swim.

Having an Ayurveda centre right next to the hotel made the stay feel even more complete; we didn’t have to step out for our experiential Kerala massage.

Rooms & Comfort

The rooms were decently sized with a plush washroom and a television.

Depending on the category you choose, you can get a sea view from your patio, window, or sundeck.(Book here)

Dining at The Bait & Hook Restaurant

varkala hotel review
Afternoon view when we checked in the hotel and went straight for lunch at it's restaurant

We checked in around mid-afternoon and headed straight to the in-house restaurant.

Their restaurant, ‘The Bait & Hook: Seaside Restaurant,’ is creatively named after the fishing culture of the area.

The restaurant feels like an upscale beach shack with wood-panelled interiors, a thatched roof, and warm yellow lamps that glow softly after sunset.

The food was decent (vegetarian options were available), though slightly on the pricier side.

The top floor offers an even better view, with bamboo lamps and a sweeping ocean backdrop.

Candlelight Dinner

Knowing how couples love indulging in outdoor candlelight dinners, this beach resort had arrangements to sit by the cliff with roaring waves as background music.

We chose to dine outdoors on our last night.

The cool breeze and soft lamp lighting made the evening beautifully serene.

The cliffside candlelight dinner is one of those memories that stayed with me long after the trip, and surprisingly, they don’t charge extra for it.

What I loved about this Varkala stay?

We had shortlisted B’canti while searching for the best hotels in Varkala, and the actual experience lived up to our expectations.

Its location and amenities were enough to keep us entertained even if we didn’t feel like sightseeing, though we did explore the area (you can read about it here).

The second time I visit Varkala, I might skip the city sightseeing entirely.

Maybe I’d rather spend all my time here, dipping in the pool or relishing the ocean view with coffee early mornings.

Or spend the evenings, letting myself drift into a daydream, while standing on the jutting cliff with the sound of waves and the salty sea breeze as the only companions.

We thoroughly enjoyed our stay.

What Could Be Better in This Varkala Beach Resort?

This Varkala cliff hotel isn’t in the city centre; it sits slightly away on the north cliff.

You can walk to the north cliff, but it takes around 45 minutes along the pathway.

The route from inside the city is slightly longer and is more feasible if you have your own vehicle or a rented one.

For instance, one evening, we struggled to find a cab back to the hotel and ended up taking a rickshaw at a higher fare.

This is why relying on outside restaurants isn’t always convenient, and it would have helped if the in-house food was more budget-friendly.

Would I recommend it?

If you’re planning a peaceful Kerala travel and love cliff views or are looking for a boutique beach resort in Kerala or Varkala cliff hotels, Bcanti Boutique Beach Resort is a stay you’ll remember long after you leave.

First Impressions & Location

hotel in alleppy review
The first view when you enter the hotel

Azure Tides turned out to be the most memorable stay of our entire Kerala trip.

Tucked away from the bustle of Mararikulam town, the resort is located at the edge of the beach.

The first thing we noticed as we entered the resort was the small sea-facing restaurant from where the ocean spanned out uninterrupted towards the horizon.

Depending on the time of day, the view changes completely.

Early in the morning, we watched fishermen entering the water while the moon still lingered faintly in the sky.

As the day progressed, the sunlight reflected off the waves, shifting from soft gold to bronze, and finally settling into silver as the sun disappeared behind the horizon.

All of this unfolded without us even stepping onto the beach.

One morning, while waiting for breakfast, we were lucky enough to spot a school of dolphins swimming close to the shore. It was an unexpected moment that felt quietly magical and made this place our favourite.

Rooms & Design

alleppy resort review
The basic rooms had direct sea view

All the rooms at Azure Tides are sea-facing, and that alone sets the mood for the stay.

The design leans towards rustic luxury, nothing overly polished, but thoughtfully done in a way that keeps you close to nature.

What stood out the most were the bathrooms. Each room had an almost outdoor-style washroom, giving an uninterrupted view of the greenery outside. ( Check prices here)

This open design also turned out to be very practical. After long hours of walking and playing on the beach, we used the washroom area to rinse off sand from our feet without dragging it into the room.

marari kulam resort review
Waiting for the sun to set, while relaxing on the sundeck outside our room

The rooms themselves were spacious, with wooden beds and mosquito nets that added a quiet South Indian, old-world charm. (Check availability for your dates here.)

At night, sitting on the sundeck surrounded by trees and shrubs, the space felt calm, private, and deeply restful.

The Beach, Slow Days & What Time Felt Like Here

Because Azure Tides sits right on the sea, the beach felt like an extension of the property rather than a separate destination.

We could step out to the beach at any time of the day and return just as easily, sometimes multiple times within a few hours.

On the first evening, we watched the sunset and then walked straight into the sea. Neither of us knows how to swim, so we didn’t venture far, just sat in the water, laughing and frolicking like children.

People, Conversations & Unexpected Connections

Because Azure Tides is slightly isolated, but amazingly designed, 60% of the rooms were occupied by foreigners.

We had some insightful conversations with people from different countries, which might not have been possible had we stayed somewhere else.

One person who made our stay easier was Shri, a staff member who spoke fluent English. Communication became much smoother after meeting him, as most of the staff spoke only broken English.

He helped bridge that gap, whether it was clarifying food orders, answering small questions, or simply checking in to see if we were comfortable.

What I loved about this Mararikulam hotel?

Because Azure Tides was isolated, wholesome and comfortable, it helped me enjoy my slow travel.

It has a great room, delicious food, an amazing location, and cleanliness.

My partner asked the staff for a few bottles of beer, for a small fee, which we relished while sitting on our sundecks outside the room.

What could be better?

Delay in Food: Because the resort is so secluded, there aren’t many places to explore nearby, no cafés, no restaurants, nothing walkable outside the property.

We relied entirely on the in-house kitchen. While the food itself was good, it often took a long time to arrive, regardless of the time of day. We had to order our meals almost an hour in advance to get them by the time we felt hungry.

Wifi Reception: The wifi reception was not great for rooms that were farther away from the reception.

Safety: If you are travelling with family, you could have to take extra care that your children don’t venture out all alone, as there was no lifeguard around in case of any water emergency.

Would I recommend this hotel in Mararikulam?

Yes. For people who love luxury and slow travel.

If you’re looking for a slow, meaningful beach stay, Azure Tides is worth considering.

The rooms are spacious, designed with wooden beds, mosquito nets, and a quiet South Indian royalty to them.

The property is surrounded by lush greenery, with shrubs and trees that make evenings on the sundeck feel intimate and calm.

munroe island resort review

Why This Stay Surprised Me

If there was one resort that surprised me the most during this Kerala trip, it was our stay at Lakes & Rivers Resort in Munroe Island. Honestly, it felt like discovering a quiet little paradise.

The name fits perfectly; the resort sits between a river on one side and calm backwaters on the other.

First Impressions & The Property

The entrance of the hotel is beautiful and thoughtfully designed, inspired by contemporary architecture without feeling flashy.

There were many amenities: a swimming pool, restaurant, play areas, and open green spaces, but what stood out was a group of ducks freely waddling across the property, who were moving elegantly all around the property.

One of them even had a green neck, exactly like the ducks I remember from childhood cartoons and storybooks, and it instantly made me like the place.

Backwaters, Kayaking & Sunset Views

Because the resort is surrounded by backwaters, kayaking is easily available.

We hired a kayak and spent a long time sailing through calm, still waters without interruption.

The backwater experience here felt untouched.

backwater in munroe island review
Quiet evenings and relaxed backwater cruise

Coconut trees lined the edges, the water stayed smooth and quiet, and the sun slowly dipped into the horizon. Watching the sky change colours while gliding through the canals was one of the most peaceful moments of the trip.

Munroe Island is still relatively unexplored, and because only a few resorts operate here, the backwaters don’t feel crowded.

Evenings at the Resort

After sunset, the resort transformed into something almost dreamy. Soft yellow garden lights lit up the pathways, adding warmth and calm to the surroundings.

We spent most of our evening outside, talking, sitting quietly, and simply taking in the atmosphere. Because the place was so beautiful and unhurried, it led to some of the most meaningful conversations I had with my partner during the entire trip.

Rooms & Comfort

The rooms were decent but not my favourite part of the stay.

They were simple, with basic beds and sheets, and the space felt a little tight. There wasn’t much room to spread out luggage or get ready without bumping into each other.

However, the washroom was surprisingly huge and very clean. One thing I did love was how the room opened into a small porch with seating.

Beyond that was another tiny setup, a table and a tree stump used as a seat, directly overlooking the backwaters for morning or evening tea.

Food & In-House Experiences

The in-house restaurant served delicious food. We ordered pasta during one of the meals and absolutely loved it.

The staff strength was limited, but everyone was extremely warm and attentive.

One staff member had a book at the reception, which sparked a conversation about where he was from and what he liked to read.

He preferred Malayalam literature over English or Hindi, which somehow felt perfectly aligned with the place.

These small, unplanned things really stayed with us even when we returned.

What I Loved Most About This Stay

What made Lakes & Rivers Resort truly special was its natural landscape, adjacent water body, and surely, the ducks.

What Could Be Better

  • The rooms are basic and slightly small for longer stays
  • The indoor game room felt stuffy and poorly ventilated, so we didn’t spend much time there
  • Nearby sightseeing and restaurant options are limited

That said, none of these took away from the overall experience.

Would I Recommend Lakes & Rivers Resort, Munroe Island?

Yes — absolutely.

If you’re looking for a slow, meaningful stay in Kerala, away from crowds, surrounded by backwaters and nature, Lakes & Rivers Resort in Munroe Island is a beautiful choice.

However, I won’t recommend this resort in Munroe Island if the quality and space of the room are of utmost importance to you.

Postcard Hotel Kochi: A Boutique Stay Worth Knowing About

We explored a lot of different unique resorts in Kerala. And there was one hotel we didn’t end up booking due to budget constraint but loved.

The postcard, Kochi.

Postcard is a chain of boutique hotels that cater to a very specific rustic appeal.

The Kochi Postcard hotel was located hidden tucked in one of the Jew street.

Unless you know the specific address, it could be hard to realise that you are crossing a luxury hotel in Kerala such as this.

We didn’t stay here due to budget, but we peeked inside and it’s genuinely impressive, here’s what you’d get.

The hotel is designed to exude the charm and royalty of South Indians in the way it has been decorated.

The lobby entry is adorned with abstract paintings with graphite floors, painting a picture of nostalgia. The entryway has banana leaves as the main attraction and decor, and the rooms look like a restored version of royal palaces with wooden windows and dim lighting.

If you have visited the Dutch palace or have seen its pictures, this hotel would not feel different from it.

End Thoughts

Best hotels are not the one that provides the best materialistic amenities, but the ones that feel like home away from home.

They make you want to stay longer than expected, and never return to your daily grind. The unique hotels & resorts in Kerala such as the ones I shared above did exactly that for me.

They resonated with how I saw travel and luxury as and gave me a unforgetful experience I will always cherish. What was that one hotel/ resort from one of the travels you always remember? Tell me in the comments.

If you are planning on a trip soon, this packing list will definitely help you plan better.

  1. Interesting to see The Postcard Hotel listed here. Even I was surprised to see the entrance when I was in Kochi in November last year.
